Croatian "Magic Flute" Modric makes his 5th appearance
Croatia’s World Cup Squad and Modrić’s Return
Six6s affiliate sign up Croatia, a Balkan nation, has announced its 26-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Among the selected players is midfield legend Luka Modrić, who, at the age of 40, will once again compete at the highest level of football, serving as captain of the Croatian national team.
This will be Modrić’s fifth World Cup appearance. He suffered a fractured cheekbone last month, which ended his season with AC Milan in Serie A, but he is expected to be fit for the opening group stage match against England in Arlington, Texas on June 17th.
Croatia’s Coach Confidence and Historic Milestones
Croatian national team coach Zlatko Dalić stated that Modrić’s inclusion is a major boost for the team. He said, “I have no doubt he will perform at a high level. As captain, he is very important to us, and I look forward to his full recovery.”
Since his debut for the national team in 2006, Modrić has accumulated 196 international appearances, the most in Croatian history. If the team advances further in the tournament, he will have the opportunity to reach the milestone of 200 international caps.
Croatia’s World Cup History and Modrić’s Legacy
In the past two World Cups, Croatia has come very close to winning the trophy. In 2018, they lost to France in the final, and four years later, they were defeated by eventual champions Argentina in the semi-finals.
This USA-Mexico World Cup is likely Modrić’s last appearance in the national team jersey, and he will undoubtedly give everything to push for the pinnacle of international football glory.
